There are 3 main types of Furnaces:

1. Single Stage Furnace
2. Two Stage Furnace
3. Modulating Furnace

Basically energy efficiency, level of comfort and installation cost go from the lowest being a single stage furnace to the highest being a modulating furnace system.

Replacing your Furnace

Replacing a furnace is many cases the obvious choice.  Especially when it comes to older units. New units can save up to $900 / year compared to the same unit 15 years ago. So if your unit is over 15 or 20 years old, chances are that you will save money by switching.
However, some older units (depending on the manufacturer) might run more efficiently than others. It is a bit of a tough decision and we recommend you to take different expert opinions on this. One option, of course, is to contact us and we will set you up with a specialist for your free consultation.

Your Heating System

Do you know what happens behind the scenes when your thermostat registers air inside is too cold? “Why would I want to know that?” Great question. When we’re on the topic of furnace repair in Calgary your Alberta in general, we want to make sure you’re ‘in the know’ on the basics of heating. This helps you feel comfortable about the decisions you make.

Knowledge is power when it comes to your home comfort system! A furnace in a very basic sense is made up of a heat exchanger, a fan motor and a flame powered by natural gas or propane. When warm air is needed, the flame ignites and heats the heat exchanger, which is a type of metal grid. Then the fan motor kicks on and pulls air from the home via the return air duct(s). The cool air is forced through the heat exchanger, which transfers heat energy to the air.

That’s not all: in the summer when the air conditioner is running, the same furnace fan motor is used to pull warm air from the home to be cooled by chilled refrigerant pumped in from the air conditioner. Variable-speed fan motors are whisper quiet, more efficient and provide better comfort.

Forced air heating remains the most popular option for heating in Southern Alberta both for its cost of installation and maintenance as the effectiveness of the system. Other types of heating such as in-floor heating can be very expensive and can incur additional maintenance service and regulations such as cross connection testing.
